Santa Quiteria and San Bonifacio Hermitage
Ten minutes away from Montfalcó is Santa Quiteria Hermitage, which you reach by taking a path surrounded by luscious vegetation. A true Aragonese Romanesque jewel nestled on a rocky peak which overlooks the void below, serving as a natural balcony. From there you’ll enjoy the finest panoramic views of Mont-Rebei Gorge and Canelles Reservoir.
The hermitage, which dates back to the 11th century, was restored by the Government of Aragón in 1996, with the help of mountain specialists PRAMES. It has an irregular rectangular floor, a half-barrel vault ceiling and a beautiful bifora completed in the Lombard style.
Montfalcó Viewpoint
From the mountain refuge, follow the trail behind the building that heads off in between holm oaks, pine trees and junipers along a rocky ridge. It takes you to a clearing, at which point you’ll need to turn left and climb a steep, tree-lined slope to reach the bare limestone outcrop where the viewpoint is located, with there also being an information board providing details of the views. In just 15 minutes you’ll be able to take in the magnificent views of the gorge, the Sabinós and Millá mountains, Canelles Reservoir, Santa Quiteria Hermitage, Fet, Corçà and more!
Fig Cave
Beneath the mountain watched over by Santa Quiteria hides the Fig Cave inside a rocky outcrop. In order to reach this place – which once upon a time was used dry and dehydrate figs – starting at Montfalcó, take the trail that leads down to the reservoir. After about 400 metres, you’ll come across a paved path and stairs which head up between limestone boulders to the base of the wall. The path continues weaving through uneven land and, without ever straying too far from the rock face, it keeps going uphill until it reaches the entrance to the cave.
Montfalcó Fountain and Washhouse
Within the proximity of Montfalcó you’ll be able to find one of the few fountains in the Sierra del Montsec, tucked away in a dark forest. The path begins by heading north from the mountain refuge car park along an interpretive route, during which informative boards will provide you with abundant information on the zone’s flora and fauna. The route loops through sections surrounded by stone walls until you get to the fountain and washhouse, where you can sit down at the picnic table.
