A very simple, short and relatively flat trip, making it the perfect option for those with children or with little hiking experience.
These lakes form part of an endorheic wetland landscape in a semi-mountainous area, making this subterranean water filtration system, which is home to a host of endemic species of creatures, a truly unique natural spot.
The route begins in the small town of Estaña, which you can access from the road that leads to Estopiñán del Castillo. In the town, there is a trail that heads south towards the largest of Estaña’s lakes. After passing through the wetlands, a path weaves southwards through boxwood, oak and juniper trees before leading to another trail. At this point the route begins to head towards the north, passing very close to the ghost town at Caserras del Castillo. Once there, the trail continues west along mostly level ground towards Estaña, where you will be able to see the small lake on the right. Before reaching the town, right next to an enormous evergreen oak tree, you can stop at an interpretive viewpoint that offers detailed information on the wetlands.
